October 18 (UPI) – Former Joint Chiefs of Staff secretary-general and chairman Colin Powell died Monday of complications from COVID-19, his family said. He was 84 years old.

Powell’s family announced his death in a Facebook post.

“General Colin L. Powell, former US secretary of state and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff died this morning as a result of complications from COVID-19,” they wrote. “We would like to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their care assistance.

“We have lost a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great American.

Powell first fought in the war during Vietnam War and rose to prominence in the military and became the first national security adviser at the end of the second term of President Ronald Reagan. He was the first Black, and the youngest, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
